MCM ho...

You know, there's something not quite right with being on a tube train at 8am in the morning, en route to the Excel Centre and the MCM Expo. And although it's relaxing, I'm not entirely sure that I like it.

I've been coming to the MCM Expo for four years now, since May 2006 and, with two events a year, that makes this my eighth convention, the previous seven all spent in hotels for both nights. One year I even stayed the Sunday night as well. But I had a reason for this - I lived in Birmingham and it was an absolute bugger to get there and back without doing the whole hotel thing.

Every MCM, I've had a routine. Arrive at the Novotel at 2pm, park up, check in, sort myself out and then set up my table. Once that was done, I was at liberty to do what I wanted the remainder of the day and night, usually involving alcohol, Dan Boultwood and a very late night. Wake up Saturday, go to con, repeat until Sunday. Then I'd check out, go to the con and, at the end I'd simply get into my car and drive home.

But now, London is my home. And, living three Central Line stops north of Stratford, getting to the Excel Centre is pretty much a thirty minute ride, so it stands to reason that I don't need a bed for the night. But although it's really, really nice to beg off early, go back home with Tracy and watch a movie, feels like I'm cheating somehow. I'm not suffering the 'full convention' experience.

But tonight I will be. Unshackled by the 'last train home', Dan and I will be staying at the Novotel once more. I'll have my full day of MCM Expo experience.

So why do I wish I was still at home in bed?...
